The Beverley 10k takes place annually and attracts runners, professional and amateur, from all over the region.

This year there were over 1,000 runners, and nestling amongst them were Jenny and Kate Turnbull from Skeffling!

The professionals aim to cover the distance in about 30 minutes, the amateurs hope for something around the one hour mark.  Jenny and Kate did it in 1h 15mins.

As Kate fell into her mother's arms at the finishing line she said breathlessly:  "I hate running!"

Most of the early finishers were from running clubs and sported their club colours.  Others chose a more imaginative style of costume.  There was a beaver, Firemen in full kit - real firemen that is, and an assortment of fancy dress.

Jenny and Kate didn't enter for any reason other than they wanted to, and their only aim was to complete the 10k.  Which they did in great style.

So girls - London next year then!

Speeding Traffic

Since publicity of speeding traffic through the villages began a few months ago, things have started to happen.

Early morning police monitoring cautioned quite a few drivers travelling between 45 and 50 mph through the village.  This highlighted   the   problem,

and prompted further action.  Skeffling Parish Councillors brought up the matter at a Liaison Meeting at Easington and were told the police were aware of the situation and investigations were under way.

This has resulted in an idea being put forward which will need the help of residents and parish councils.  To outline the proposal a meeting has been arranged for the matter to be discussed with the public to gauge the opinion of residents.  All the villages in the area are involved as they all experience the same trouble with speeding.

It has taken a long time to convince the police that we have a problem with speeding, and it's vitally important that something is done now before a serious accident happens and someone loses their life.

The meeting will be held on Thursday, 25th June at Skeffling Village Hall.  Full details will be in the June issue of Skeffling News.

Auction Night

Just a brief reminder of the Bumper Auction at the Village Hall on Saturday, 4th July.

Details are still being finalised, but will be in the June issue of Skeffling News.

Council News

The Annual General meeting of Skeffling Parish Council  was  held  at  7pm on Tuesday, 5th May at the Village Hall.

Page 2

Mike Turnbull was re-elected as Chairman, and Syd Rollinson was elected Vice Chairman.

In the Chairman's report Cllr. Turnbull thanked the Council for their hard work during the past year, and the Steering Group for their excellent production of the Parish Plan. There have been compliments on the Parish Plan from other parishes and there has been  talk  of  an  award being made of which Skeffling will be a contender. ERVAS, who gave  us  the  grant  of £1,600, has written to say the work on the Parish Plan is now complete.

The pipe has been laid across Mr. Meadley's field. It was finished last year and the grant for the work was received from East Riding of Yorkshire Council. It is hoped this will alleviate the flooding problem in the Village.

He concluded by saying it had been a very constructive year and that this year the Council would continue to improve facilities for the village.

The monthly meeting of Skeffling Parish Council followed the AGM at 7.30pm.

Figures for the Annual Audit 2008/2009 were put before  the  council  and were agreed to be an accurate account of the Council's expenditure during the past year.

An application has been made in the Withernsea area to buy 10/15 acres of land to plant woodland.  If agreeable, each parish in the area will be a member of the trust in charge of the project.  The project will cost approximately £250,000 and will be subject to obtaining grants. A trustee from each council would be on the Management Committee. These plans are in the initial  stages  and  before

committing the Council to this project more facts were needed.

The Parish Plan Steering Group will meet shortly to see if any progress can be made on the action points in the Parish Plan.

The next meeting of the Parish Council will be on Tuesday, 2nd June.

Everyone is welcome to attend and put their views and ideas to the Council. However, please note that abusive, insulting and disruptive behaviour by the public will not be tolerated.

Village Hall AGM

This year the Village Hall Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday, 21st May starting at 7.30pm in the Village hall.

Anyone can attend the meeting, and if you'd like to volunteer your help or join the committee, this will be your chance to do just that.

It's also an opportunity to put to the committee any ideas you might have for future social evenings, fund raising, or just a chatty coffee morning.

Since the refurbishment our Village Hall has received a lot more bookings.  Wedding receptions,  birthday parties, meetings, local interest forums, and lots more.  The increasing popularity of the Village Hall is all due to the hard work of the Village Hall Committee and the Parish Council who have chased the grants to improve the facilities.

Next month I'll be able to give you a list of events for the year.
