Editorial

It's hard to believe but Skeffling News is seven years old!

During that time a lot has happened in Skeffling, and I've done my best to make sure it has all been reported honestly and faithfully.

The only time two issues have been missed completely was June and July this year.  That was when the lightening strike hit my phone line and fried my computer!  It took six weeks to sort out the insurance claim and get things up and running again.  Lots of other people in the village suffered the same fate and we were all amazed at how much technology has taken over our lives.

It was also a bit of an eye opener when I realised the amount of information I store on my computer. Contact details, addresses, phone numbers, even birthdays. And that's without copies of letters, emails, then there's my website, back copies of Skeffling News, Council agendas and minutes.

And don't forget shopping! Most of that I do on-line now.

For the whole of those six weeks I felt really out of touch with relatives and friends because I contact them all via my computer. Long gone are the days when I'd spend an hour or two writing letters by hand!

We've come to rely on our computers for so many things it's hard to imagine life without it..

Back to Skeffling News... I'm afraid there won't be an issue in October because I'll be on holiday.  When I get back I'm hoping life will return to normal and Skeff News will appear regularly once again.

If anything exciting happens while I'm away, please let me know  It's not always easy finding things for Skeff News, and I'm really grateful for any contributions…

Dave's Bench

Next time you go for a walk to St. Helen's and feel in need of a sit down, just go into the grounds and at the side of the main door you'll find Dave Small's commemorative bench.

We spend so much time rushing around, being busy, now and again it's nice to just sit and let your thoughts drift where they choose.

Dave's Bench is beautifully situated and the perfect place to spend some time in peaceful contemplation.

My Brilliant Divorce

There are still some tickets available for My Brilliant Divorce, but they are selling quickly.

My Brilliant Divorce was nominated for 'Best Entertainment' at the Olivier Awards after playing a sell-out season in London's West End.

And now it's coming to Skeffling!

The only difference is, you won't have to pay West End prices to see the play.

My Brilliant Divorce is a comedy with a touch of pathos, brilliantly written and superbly performed, and it's on at Skeffling Village Hall on Friday, 23rd September.

Tickets are £6, and it starts at 7.30pm. Included in the ticket price will be light refreshments during the interval.  This will be tea, coffee, cakes and biscuits.

Tickets can be bought from Skeffling Post Office or Julie Newsam, and they're ready to buy right now.

It promises to be an excellent night and tickets are selling fast, so don't leave it too late.

Room to Play…

It's well known that Skeffling has a fair amount of musical talent in the village.  What isn't so well known is that there are a lot of young musicians in Skeffling, too.

Guitarists, drummers, singers, keyboards, and the list goes on.  There are also a few budding bands in the area, who, with hard work and practice, could be the next big band to hit the music world.  Now that would really put Skeffling on the map!

The magic word here is 'practice'.  Where do they go to rehearse?

What about Skeffling Village Hall?

The Village Hall is available for anyone to hire for their own personal use, and the fees are very reasonable.  One hour will cost as little as £5, and if there are 5 people in the band that's £1 each.  The only restriction is you have to be 18 to hire the hall, but maybe you've got a suitable adult who'll hire it on your behalf, and make sure you leave everything as neat and tidy as you found it.

It's the ideal place for rehearsals as it's big, plenty of electric sockets, even a small stage!

Anyone who'd like to know more about this, or would like to book the hall, please ring Lynda Payne on 650379.

East End Cancer Fund

Tom Hessell has asked Skeffling News to thank everyone for the generous donations given following Charmain Parsonage's funeral.  All the money was given to the East End Cancer Relief Fund in Charmain's memory.

Mary Brisby, of the East End Cancer Relief Fund, has written to Tom thanking him for the donations which amounted to £361.19p.

The money will go towards patients' care, comfort and equipment, at the Cancer Centre at Castle Hill Hospital, Cottingham.  The East End Cancer Relief Fund are in the process of donating a sum of £10,000 to the hospital from fund raising and donations this year.

Once again, thank you all very much…You can see a copy of the letter HERE

Bonfire Night

This year Bonfire Night will be on 5th November! Now there's a surprise.  It's a Saturday, and promises to be another night to remember.

If you'd like to make a contribution there will be donations buckets in the Village Hall on the night, but please don't bring your own fireworks we've got plenty!

There'll be a BBQ, and home-made soup, tea, coffee and soft drinks available in the Village Hall.

Bring the kids and come and have a good time.  You can even have your supper while watching the firework display.

The BBQ will be ready about 6.30pm and the fireworks will start to light up the night sky soon after…

New Bus Timetable

When the new 75 bus route from Hull to Withernsea replaced the 76 bus   route   there   was  an

outcry of complaints from regular bus users.  This left passengers for Hull with an hourly bus service instead of half-hourly.

Following meetings and growing public pressure, EYMS is set to reinstate the half-hourly off peak service on 30 October.

Whilst most of the timetable will remain the same, there will be some changes.  Once the new bus timetable has been distributed, a copy will be put on the Skeffling Community Website.  If you want to check this, the website address is: www.thomas-hessell.co.uk.

Due to the nation's economy continuing to worsen, EYMS are going to find it tough to make ends meet during the next year.

Their costs are increasing, and grants they are eligible for are decreasing.  This means fares will be gradually increased and some cuts will still be necessary, but, for now, EYMS will do their best to provide passengers with the bus service they need.
