Once again Burn's Night was an overwhelming success...
It might be my imagination, but I think the Haggis tasted better this year! The Kingstown Pipers was superb, and as well as piping in the Haggis in the traditional way, provided a very lively evening's entertainment.
As well as popular Scottish songs, there was plenty of rock and roll, and the drummer did a pretty decent impersonation of Elvis.
All the proceeds from Burn's Night will go to The Stroke Association, and the night raised a massive £582.40p. The Village Hall committee would like to thank everyone for their generosity, and everyone who came would like to thank the Village Hall committee for making the evening one to remember.
The generosity didn't end there though. The Kingstown Pipers refused to accept their fee, and asked the Village Hall committee to use the
money in any way they chose. It took them seconds to decide to use the money for a memorial in memory of Dave Small...

The raffle organisers for Burn's Night are hoping you kept your raffle tickets because there are two unclaimed prizes.

The refurbishment of St. Helen's is going well and right on schedule. This means the work will be completed by the end of March.
When I spoke to Reverend Canon Stephen Cope he told me they are hoping to be back in St. Helen's for Easter Day when the service will be at 8am. The first Sunday Service will be at 9.30am on 1st May. An official reopening ceremony
will take place on St. Helen's Day, Thursday 18th August at 6pm. The Archdeacon of the East Riding and the Deanery Choir will join the celebrations.
It was a dreadful blow to the community when St. Helen's was closed. At that time no one knew whether the money could be raised to refurbish the church as the costs were enormous. The local community held many fund raising events and Stephen Cope worked hard to locate the grants which were necessary to put the refurbishment into action. So it is wonderful news that St. Helen's will soon be used again for worship.
"There is one small fly in the ointment," Revd. Cope said. "The church is still about £15,000 short, although we won't know the exact amount until the final invoices are in. So we might be looking for a short-term loan or two to tide us over if things go wrong. Any help in this area would be most gratefully received."
St. Helen's holds a special place in the hearts of local people and is visited regularly by many families. It also has a proud history which the recent refurbishment will help take it a long way into the future.
Church Services Until the refurbishment of St. Helen's is finished, church Services will be held on the first Sunday of March and
the first Sunday of April at Windy Nook, Humber Lane. The Services will begin at 9.30am, and are open to anyone who would like to attend. You will all receive a warm welcome.
Short Mat Bowling
Everyone who's been to the Village Hall lately has asked the same question: "What are those for?"
'Those' being the bowling mats neatly rolled up just inside the door. A lot of other people have asked when they're going to be used! It's a fair question, and it's up to you.
Many of you know that Easington, Welwick and a few other villages have their own short mat bowling teams, and when we were offered the mats it seemed like a good idea.
So, who would like to give it a try? Bowling has always been a popular sport, both indoor and outdoor, and if you've always wanted to give it a try here's your chance.
If you're interested please contact Mike Turnbull on 650330 or Toni Cornford on 650032 and leave your name and contact details. Who knows, Skeffling might even end up with its own indoor Bowling Team!
At the moment the mats are taking up a lot of valuable space in the Village Hall, So please let Mike or Toni know if you'd like to come along for a trial run, or the mats will be going on eBay!

TV Switch Over
The digital TV switchover is getting closer. On 3 August 2011 the Belmont transmitter which services Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire will be switched to digital. On 7 September 2011 the Emley Moor transmitter which services most of Yorkshire will be switched to digital.
So what will this mean to us tele addicts?
If you already have, or plan to get, Freeview, BT Vision or Top Up TV, all you'll have to do on the switchover date is re-tune your digital TV or box.
If you have, or plan to get, Sky TV, Freesat from Sky, freesat or Virgin Media you already have this service on all your TV sets so you won't need to do anything.
However, if you have Analogue TV (which is five channels or fewer), you will need to convert your TV or you will lose channels at switchover.
For those who do not have a digital TV or box there's help available to get you digitalised...
The Switchover Help Scheme is here to help everyone aged 75 and over,
or disabled people, by providing the equipment and practical support needed to switch one TV to digital.
If you know someone who is eligible, please make sure they get the help they are entitled to. Tell them to call 0800 40 85 900 or go to www.helpscheme.co.uk.
The Switchover Help Scheme is run by the BBC.
What does the Switchover Help Scheme do?
The Switchover Help Scheme is run by the BBC and provides older and disabled people with everything they need to switch one TV to digital. The standard option includes: easy-to-use equipment, installation by an approved installer, A 12-month aftercare service. There is an all-inclusive cost of £40 for the standard option or for eligible people on certain income-related benefits, it's FREE.
Whatever your age, if you have any concerns of how the switchover will affect you, please ring digital UK on 08456 50 50 50, or visit www.digitaluk.co.uk. They will answer all your questions and will help with impartial advice.
Digital TV will give us more channels to choose from and better reception, but will it give us better programmes! Please let me know what you think...
